The Easter Festival in Salzburg was introduced in 1967 by Herbert von Karajan, a native of Salzburg, and presented the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra annually on the stage in Salzburg. Up until his death in 1989, Herbert von Karajan himself directed the Easter Festival. In 2011 Sir Simon Rattle will, once again, resume the musical direction.

This year, the Festival promotes the opera “Salome” by Richard Strauss, which will open the Festival on April 16 at the “Großes Festspielhaus” (the Great Festival Hall). For a few years now, the “Kontrapunkte” (“Alternative” performances) have been part and parcel of the programme.
