A pulsating place to meet.
From the moment you walk in, you realise that history has been written here. The first documentary evidence of the oldest Benedictine monastery in Austria - a spiritual meeting place and European hub - goes back to 739. It was a place for collecting art treasures, an educational institution with a boarding school for boys, and a lodging for travellers: the monasteries were a day’s ride apart. Those travelling to the east could take up quarters at Kremsmünster monastery; moving in the other direction, one could spend the night in Salzburg. In 1810, the monastery became a castle: Napoleon gave it to Count Wrede as a present. That was when worldly life was introduced; Mondsee became a place to meet, do business, celebrate grand festivities, and indulge in the divine beauty of the landscapes. And that has not changed.
