Sustainability at Mondsee Castle

Did you know that by July or August each year, we humans have already used up all the natural resources that the earth can provide within a year?

We at Schloss Mondsee are aware of this

That is why we are trying to improve step by step, and have been doing so since we took over in 2014, always keeping in mind the requirements of historic preservation. We have almost completely banned plastic from the breakfast buffet, and we have built up good relationships with regional suppliers. Our meat is sourced exclusively from Austria or northern Italy, and food is not flown to us if at all possible, but transported overland for as short a time as possible.

BWT mineralised spring water

Here in the Salzkammergut we are blessed with good water quality, which is why we rely on BWT mineralised spring water throughout the house, and you can refill your own water bottles around the clock at our water station. One of these water stations is located on the 1st floor next to the 24/7 shop.

We continued with the "energy guzzlers" in the house. The intelligent heating and air conditioning control, which automatically deactivates when rooms are not occupied, was a big step here.

Small Gesture, Big Impact

Sustainability often begins with small decisions that, together, make a meaningful difference. When guests hang the black fabric bag, provided in every hotel room, on the door handle, our housekeeping team knows that room cleaning is not required on that day.

Choosing to forgo housekeeping helps save water, energy, and cleaning products – a small step with a significant positive impact on the environment. As a token of our appreciation, guests will find a small surprise in the fabric bag, thanking them for their contribution to a more sustainable future.

These are just a few of the conversions and current projects, but we believe that every step in the sustainable direction has a positive impact on the bigger picture.
