It is the oldest Benedictine monastery in Austria and was built in 748 a.c.. In former times it was one of the spiritual centres of Europe. The monks collected precious artefacts, were well educated and offered quarters for travellers.

From the monastery to the castle

In 1810, the monastery became a castle: Napoleon gifted it to Count Wrede. Secular life took hold—people gathered in Mondsee to conduct business, celebrate grand festivities, and enjoy the extraordinarily beautiful surroundings; and that hasn’t changed to this day.
