History of Schloss Mondsee: from the former monastery to today's hotel

Schlosshotel Mondsee looks back on a history spanning more than 1,000 years. From the moment you step inside, you can sense the unique atmosphere of this extraordinary place. Founded in 748, Mondsee Abbey is one of Austria's oldest surviving Benedictine monasteries. Following centuries of destruction and reconstruction, the magnificent Basilica was added in the 15th century, completing the historic ensemble.

In the 18th century, the monastery came into the possession of Napoleon and was later acquired by the noble families of Wrede and subsequently Almeida. In 1985, the castle was purchased by the Asamer family and, following extensive restoration, opened its doors in 2001 as Schlosshotel Mondsee.

From 2014 onwards, Schlosshotel Mondsee was shaped with great passion by Gerald Kienesberger and Hanni Schweighofer. Since 2025, the hotel has been undergoing a careful process of generational transition and development. Under the leadership of Gerald Kienesberger, together with the Kienesberger family and Marco Romano, the future of the castle is being thoughtfully shaped—preserving its rich heritage while creating space for fresh ideas and new perspectives.

In this way, the story of Schlosshotel Mondsee continues to evolve, remaining true to its remarkable past while embracing the opportunities of the future.
